Confession: I’m obsessed with turmeric. Very L.A..

Note: Turmeric is obsessed with me. Very RAD.

When I was looking for natural alternatives for my constant upset stomach, turmeric came up. When I was having a hard time emotionally during the winters in New York, turmeric came up. When I was researching dietary changes I could make to help with my eczema and psoriasis, turmeric came up.

So when I moved to L.A. and everyone was taking turmeric shots after their workouts and offering turmeric lattes in lieu of espresso based lattes, I was in.

It’s a match made in heaven, so here are my tips on turmeric, why you should get in on this golden glory and an intro to the blend that has changed my life!

1) Don’t Forget Turmeric’s Bestie, Black Pepper

Because I definitely did. But first, a little “Turmeric:101.”

Turmeric contains bioactive compounds with powerful medicinal properties – basically a spice living a pharmaceutical life. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin – which is the primary active ingredients in turmeric. It contains powerful anti-inflammatory and strong antioxidant properties (more on that later), but the twist is that curcumin is not easily absorbed by the body. So while this golden goodness is great for your health, in order to experience it’s full benefits, invite black pepper  and it’s power compound, piperine, to the party. Pro tip.

2) My Body On Turmeric

Worth repeating – turmeric is truly a physician living a spice’s life. Sprinkle this ish on everything!

As a natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-depressant, I have seen a significant difference in my mood and especially in my fit life. Like I mentioned earlier, I have a very sensitive stomach. Partially due to my emotional nature as a Cancer (hey, late June and July babies), but mostly due to an exercise induced issue I discovered a few years ago when I was running races on the regular. Basically, whenever I do an intense workout for longer than an hour my stomach cramps up like nobody’s business. That was until I discovered turmeric. My tummy is happier than ever – exercising and beyond. Plus the other benefits of this golden spice haven’t been too bad either. My skin literally glows now that my eczema and psoriasis have met my daily turmeric regimen (more on this below). And my overall mood feels much more stable season to season.

3) Shots, Lattes, Smoothies – Oh My!

Ready to add turmeric to your diet? Well here are the three ways I get my fix – usually partaking in two out of the three every day. Note: You can pick up turmeric from your local grocery store – ground or in it’s natural root form. Or you can do a blend, like me! I LOVE GOLDYN GLOW.

Turmeric Detox Shots

Perfect for pre-fife or post-workout, a turmeric shots are my fav. I usually take one first thing in the morning (pre-life) or after a hard core workout to off-set soreness and speed up recovery. Here are my mixology skills:

1 teaspoon GOLDYN GLOW DETOX

1 Tablespoon Bragg Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar

Filtered water

Organic honey (optional)

Using these cute little mason jars I combine all the ingredients. Shake it up and take it to the head like a shot. Easy peasy! I will make five on Sunday night and they are ready to go in the fridge all week.

Turmeric Berry Smoothies

Antioxidants galore – I love this delicious and nutritious smoothie as an afternoon treat or pre-sweat snack. Here is how I blend this baby up:

1 teaspoon GOLDYN GLOW ENERGY

1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (feel free to use your favorite milk or milk substitute)

1 scoop plant-based protein powder (I love Vega Protein & Greens, Chocolate)

1 cup frozen mixed berries (Trader Joe’s Berry Medley is my fav)

1/2 banana

Throw all of the above goodness in a blender and enjoy this spiced up smoothie!

Turmeric Latte

Wind down and glow up with the warm and yummy twist on a classic latte. I love mine with a side of whatever book I’m reading in the afternoon or as a pre-bedtime treat. Here is how I whisk up this mug friendly fun:

1 teaspoon GOLDYN GLOW HAPPY

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (feel free to use your favorite milk or milk substitute)

Organic honey (optional)

Warm up your milk either on the stove or in the microwave. Add your GOLDYN GLOW HAPPY and a little honey (if you like it sweet). Then, here’s the fun part, get your froth on with a handheld milk frother. You’ll never buy a regular latte again!
